The human hippocampus is a small structure, about the size of a child's thumb, located deep in the medial portion of the temporal lobe. Information flows into and through the hippocampus by means of the three principal pathways:

1. Perforant pathway, which runs from the entorhinal cortex to the  granule cells of the denate gyrus;

2. Mossy fiber pathway, which runs from the granule cells of the dentate gyrus to the pyramidal cells of the CA3 region the hippocampus;

3. Schaffer collateral pathway, which runs from the CA3 region to the CA1 region.
