Scientific Understanding of Consciousness |
What is the brain's neural mechanism of sexually-based love? My speculation is that sexually-based love between two people is like any other form of addiction. Some of the same circuits of the limbic system's pleasure pathway are involved in modulating neural activity and enhancing intense synaptic reconfiguration for indelibly etched synaptic efficacy pathways.
The block diagram shows some of the phenomena involved. The consciousness of love involves a subjective feeling involving emotions and affects. Emotions range from fear to pleasure.
Sexually based love is founded upon nature's fundamental reproductive drive motivated by lust. After much experience over time, with affects from the sensory system and internally generated emotions involving the pleasure pathway of the limbic system, the neural network’s synaptic efficacies are indelibly modified.
The result is that two people with a sexually-based mutual attraction, i.e. love, have a mutual addiction.
